A variety of ancient religions and practices are responsible for the history and practice of mindfulness. These include Hinduism Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism. But how did it reach the West? Buddhism is a complex case. This is because it doesn't have any theological doctrines or God. Instead, it focuses on transformation in one life and rebirth the next. Buddhism is mostly associated with the West's health psychology. These cultures share many similarities, as well as the history and practice of mindfulness.

Buddhism

The history of mindfulness is rooted in early Buddhism. Jon Kabat Zinn (Professor of Medicine) adapted the Buddhist teachings to Western culture. He founded the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic, Massachusetts, in 1979. The original name of Kabat-Zinn’s program was Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program. Later, it was renamed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. His work, although he did not explicitly mention Buddhism, was widely considered scientific.

Westerners began to become interested in Eastern philosophy in late 19th century. But Western meditation wasn't widely adopted until the mid-20th centuries. At this time, renowned eastern meditation masters began to visit the West to share their techniques with western students. Many Western students started to travel to Asia to study with the best masters. How did mindfulness become so popular? The practice has advanced a lot since its humble beginnings as a niche one.

Hinduism

Both mindfulness and Buddhism are well-known for their meditative practices. However, Hinduism has a rich and fascinating history. In Hindu scripture, there are references to silence, acceptance, meditation, and acceptance. This ancient religion dates back several millennia before Christianity and Buddhism. Its founding scripture, the Bhagavad Gita, discusses these practices. Buddhist meditation is actually based on Hinduism.
