The History of Mindfulness in North America

mindfulness history

A variety of ancient religions and practices are responsible for the history and practice of mindfulness. These include Hinduism Buddhism and Tibetan Buddhism. But how did it find its way to the West? Buddhism is an especially difficult case, since it is a religion that has no theological doctrines of God and focuses on transformation in this life and rebirth in the next. Buddhism is associated with Western health psychology. There are however many similarities between these cultures, and the history of mindfulness.

Buddhism

The history of mindfulness is rooted in early Buddhism. Jon Kabat Zinn - Professor of Medicine - adapted the Buddha's teachings for Western culture. The Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic was established in Massachusetts in 1979. Kabat-Zinn originally created the Stress Reduction and Relaxation Program, but it was later renamed Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. While he didn't explicitly refer to Buddhism in his work, it was widely accepted as scientific.

Westerners first became interested in Eastern philosophy around the end of the nineteenth century. However, Western meditation was only popularized in the mid-20th century. Famous eastern meditation masters visited the West in order to share their methods with western students. Many Western students started to travel to Asia to study with the best masters. How did mindfulness become so well-known? The practice has advanced a lot since its humble beginnings as a niche one.

Hinduism

While Buddhism and mindfulness are both known for its meditative practices, Hinduism has a long and interesting history. The scriptures of Hinduism contain references to meditation and acceptance. This ancient religion dates back several millennia before Christianity and Buddhism. The Bhagavadgita, its founding scripture, discusses these practices. Buddhist meditation is in fact based upon Hinduism. Siddhartha Gautama, the founder of Buddhism, grew up in India and his education was influenced by Hinduism.

The Bhagavad Gita is found in large libraries throughout the United States. In addition to its Hindu roots, Buddhism has embraced Hindu meditation practices. The Upanishads, the ancient Hindu scriptures, are replete with references to meditation, silence, and acceptance. These same principles have been promoted by many Hindu teachers. Mindfulness refers to the ability to remain calm in the present without focusing on the future or past.

Tibetan Buddhism

Late Indian Buddhism was responsible for the transmission of Buddhist teachings from India to Tibet. Interactions between India's different traditions were at their highest point from the eighth to the thirteenth centuries. The fourteenth century saw Buddhism almost disappear from India's native land due to institutional competition, invasions and scarcity resources. It was then that Tibet became the centre of Buddhism in central Asia. The religion spread to nearby countries. Tibetan Buddhism has a rich history that is full of myths, philosophy, and history.

Buddhist teachings typically present meditation as a means of resolving dissatisfaction regarding embodied existence. The practice is divided into three major phases. "Giving and receiving" meditation refers to the control of one's breathing as well as his/her relationship with other beings. In the first stage, a meditator is in an awareness state during which he/she can sense a connection between the two realms.

Western health psychology

This article examines the history of mindfulness and health psychology in North America. Both practices have thrived. It explores the relationship between health psychology and mindfulness, examining how it has shaped cultural understandings of health, and the direction taken by health service provision in markets and social systems. It also examines the role played by social psychology in the history and development of health and well-being. These two fields share many similarities, but there are still some differences.

Jon KabatZinn is the most important figure in the history and practice of mindfulness in West. He was introduced to meditation at MIT by a Zen missionary. He was a student at the Insight Meditation Center in Providence and used other traditions to help him teach mindfulness. Kabat Zinn, who founded the University of Massachusetts Medical School’s Stress Reduction Centre and created Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction.
